Abstract:
To help students understand application of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace, the AI Bias Audit assignment was used in a core curriculum course, Science and Humanity. This course analyzes science’s uses and limitations in society with one course unit focusing on computers, large data, and AI. Since most future jobs will implement AI, students explored cases in recent history when gender, socioeconomic, or racial bias were inadvertently introduced into the AI algorithm. Students used critical thinking skills to explain what occurred and how to remedy it in the future.
Outcomes:
1. Understand more about bias occurring in AI.
2. Utilize this assignment as a foundation for use in their courses.
3. Explore using similar strategies within their teaching.
